NGO Support for Refugees at Siret Customs

Siret Customs, the gateway to Romania for Ukrainian refugees, continues to be a place of welcome and assistance for those crossing the border in search of safety. Non-governmental organisations in the area play a crucial role in providing support and help to these people in need. These NGOs are committed to providing assistance, 7 days a week and run a wide range of services to meet the multiple needs of refugees.

A fundamental aspect of NGO support is the provision of food aid. Refugees arriving at Siret Customs receive essential food parcels, including food, snacks, water and sweets. These food supplies are not only vital for their survival during the difficult journey, but are also a source of comfort in times of stress and uncertainty.

In addition to food needs, humanitarian organisations also provide hygiene supplies. Refugees benefit from personal hygiene products, sanitary products for women and cleaning products. This hygienic support is essential for maintaining personal health and preventing the spread of disease, especially in the difficult conditions these people find themselves in.

In addition, NGOs provide emotional and psychological support. Refugees are going through an extremely difficult and traumatic period, due to the events that forced them to leave Ukraine. Specialised psychologists and counsellors provide assistance to help them cope with the stress, anxiety and trauma associated with their experiences. For refugee children, NGOs provide playgrounds and recreational activities that allow them to enjoy some normality and relax in a safe environment.

Ukrainian refugees at Siret customs: Humanitarian Needs and Challenges

Ukrainian refugees crossing the Romanian border through the Siret Customs crossing point face many humanitarian needs as they seek safety and shelter in our country. Although Romania has made efforts to receive and assist refugees, there are still significant challenges in meeting these needs.

One of the most urgent needs of refugees is accommodation. Many of them arrive at Siret Customs in search of shelter, but unfortunately there are only a limited number of NGOs and organisations that can provide accommodation. Thus, some refugees find themselves in the difficult situation of seeking temporary shelter, exposed to risks such as exploitation and extreme weather conditions.

Another pressing need is healthcare. Especially during the cold season, the number of refugees seeking medical help increases significantly. Unfortunately, the reduction of many funds and limited medical resources have led to a shortage of medicines needed to treat refugees’ illnesses and medical conditions. This situation poses a threat to the health and well-being of these vulnerable people, who are experiencing great hardship.

It should also be mentioned that Romania has shown solidarity with the refugees and has made efforts to provide them with support within the available resources. However, the large number of refugees and the complexity of their needs pose a significant challenge. The Romanian government, NGOs and humanitarian organisations must continue to work together to find viable solutions and ensure that Ukrainian refugees receive much-needed help.
