Civil Society Coordination Meeting on March 16th, 2023 – Meeting Minutes

1. UNHCR provides support for refugee mothers and children in Suceava: offices, active points and a busy integration team

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, continues to provide support for refugee mothers and children in Suceava through offices and active points in the area. The UNHCR office in Suceava is located at 9A Mihail Sadoveanu Street and is available to provide information, support and advice to those seeking protection and assistance.

In addition to the Suceava office, UNHCR also has active points in other parts of Ukraine, the agency’s integration team is always busy working with refugees to help them integrate into local communities, access health and education services, find jobs and develop language skills.

A monthly programme implemented by UNHCR involves approaching local town halls and monitoring refugees to ensure they receive the necessary support and assistance.

2. Save the Children continues to work with the beneficiaries of the centres in Suceava: daily programme, activities for children and mothers

Save the Children continues to provide constant and active support to the beneficiaries of the centres in Suceava. With a daily program from 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, the organization offers activities for children and mothers, aimed not only at education and cultural accommodation, but also support for their enrollment in the education system, psychological counseling and assistance in accessing social services.

Most of the beneficiaries are long-term, and Save the Children ensures that their needs are met while providing opportunities for personal development and social integration.

Save the Children also provides social, psychological and legal counselling for both children and adults. This ensures that beneficiaries are informed of their rights and obligations, and the team of specialists supports them if they encounter difficulties.

3. Star of Hope organises support groups for mothers and men in the Moara centre

In addition to the comprehensive package of services and activities dedicated to Ukrainian refugees, Star of Hope has started organizing support groups for mothers and men in the Moara centre.

In particular, these activities aim to provide support and counselling on the problems refugees face. Star of Hope has decided to organise activities for men as well, as they are also in a difficult situation and there are no counselling and support programmes dedicated to them.

This programme is run with the support of a team of specialists, who provide psychological counselling, assistance in accessing social and medical services and legal advice. Support groups are an important means of providing emotional support and encouraging social interaction between refugees.

The activities carried out by Star of Hope have an important impact on the refugee community in Suceava and provide the necessary support for them to successfully integrate into Romanian society. The Foundation continues to work closely with local authorities and other organisations to provide the best services and support to refugees.

4. The recruitment process is becoming increasingly aggressive in Ukraine. The flow of refugees is expected to increase

According to direct sources, the recruitment process is becoming increasingly aggressive in Ukraine. Moreover, a counter-attack by Ukrainian forces is expected at the end of April, which could lead to an increase in the flow of refugees.

Security forces are actively involved in finding and recruiting young men for military service. In these circumstances, many young men choose to flee and seek refuge in other countries.
