Refugee flow has reached 3,000 people a day; ISU provides free transport while taxi drivers raise fares
The humanitarian situation in the affected areas continues to attract increasing numbers of refugees, which has led to a significant increase in the flow of migrants. Local authorities are struggling to cope, offering free transport to key locations, but taxi drivers are taking the opportunity to increase fares.
According to recent information, the number of refugees arriving in the Suceava area has reached around 3,000 people a day. This significant increase in the flow of migrants puts additional pressure on available resources and requires careful coordination to ensure the necessary assistance and support.
Despite logistical challenges, the ISU Suceava continues to provide free transport for refugees arriving at customs to Suceava airport, train station or other locations in the area. This initiative is a vital measure to facilitate the safe journey and resettlement of those in need at a time when transport resources are stretched to the limit.
However, the situation has been overshadowed by unfair practices among local taxi drivers. They have been accused of considerably increasing fares for journeys from customs to various destinations in the area, taking advantage of the crisis situation. Refugees thus face significantly higher costs to travel within the country or to reach their places of shelter.
The opportunity to volunteer at Maltez and the financial limitations faced by the organisation
The Maltez humanitarian organisation continues to expand its team of volunteers to provide support and assistance to people affected by the humanitarian crisis. However, due to lack of funds, the organisation is no longer able to provide hot meals to volunteers working in the Siret customs area.
Maltez, with extensive experience in providing humanitarian aid, operates in a large and complex environment. To meet the current challenges, the organisation is looking for dedicated and committed people willing to provide humanitarian support where it is most needed. For more information and to become a Maltez volunteer, those interested can visit the official website: https://www.orderofmaltavision2050.com/.
The Foundation is grateful for the commitment and efforts of its volunteers and encourages them to continue to provide support in other forms such as medical assistance, psychological counselling and educational activities.
Despite these difficulties, Maltez remains committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those affected by the crisis. By recruiting new volunteers and working with other organisations and local authorities, the organisation aims to expand its impact and provide support to those in need in the most effective and coordinated way possible.
Non-governmental foundations in Siret Customs: A hope for refugees arriving in Romania
Non-governmental foundations in Siret customs have become an essential support for refugees arriving in Romania.
A crucial aspect is the support provided by the Star of Hope Romania Foundation which provides hygiene kits, including cleaning and personal hygiene products, sandwiches, coffee, tea and sweets, giving refugees a moment of respite and comfort during their difficult transit.
In addition, the organisation also provides guidance to refugees, offering them information and assistance in various aspects of their migration process. Volunteers are on hand to answer questions and guide refugees to available resources and services.
Medical support is provided by the doctor employed by SOH in the special medical care container. Providing basic medical care and health assessments to refugees, ensuring that first medical needs are met and that additional support is provided in case of emergency.
All these efforts are possible thanks to the financial support and the project developed in collaboration with Care/Sera, which made it possible to expand the services and resources offered by Star of Hope Foundation Romania, both in Siret Customs and in the Moara Refugee Centre in Suceava.
At the same time, Save the Children is ending its work in customs, focusing on the centre in Suceava. This change will allow the organisation to streamline its resources and provide more focused and appropriate support to the needs of children and families affected by the humanitarian crisis. The new changes will take effect at the end of June.
